Open Source Development Metrics
I find statistics and charts on the development of open source quite fascinating. In the past I've used tools such as CIA, which tracks commits to project like KDE. It is then possible to track all manner of details.
Today I came across Ohloh. It describes itself as, "Mapping the open source world by collecting objective information on open source projects." Check out my statistics. Ohloh also tracks statistics for KDE overall.
This data is collected solely from kdelibs and kdebase in trunk. It makes an assumption of the number of "person years" it would take to write the the lines of code we have, and then multiplies that by an estimated $55,000 (USD) per year, per developer to produce some rough estimate what it would cost to develop KDE in the absence of volunteer work. Of course this neglects all the other non-programming work, as well as the work on KDE 1, 2 & 3.
Naturally the English Breakfast Network (EBN) provides our own statistics on both project activity and potential errors in code or documentation.
Danny Allen's Commit Digest has been getting better as well. Each week we are treated to some beautiful charts dissecting all the (programming) work that has gone into KDE.

Do not read too much into commit numbers. Not only are there big patches, small patches, and even whitespace indentation patches, you also need to consider that maintainers should be committing all kinds of patches contributed by other users.
Does give a nice sense of achievement though, congratulations, give yourself a pat on the back.
Alan: The more advanced tools do take into account the number of files modified/lines of code/characters and so are more useful than simple commit number. However, point taken, they don't take into account everything, nor will they probably ever. That said, they still might be useful.
Forget the self flattering statistics I've noted, but consider checking time from security announcement to fix, or determining how fast bugs are closed. Look at how subjective studies like this are. Even limited utility is better than none.
You know, I was in Calgary at a web developer conference and I heard about the US intelligence groups investing into KDE. There was KDE developer there... Pretty cool actually. I think it shows the power open source... with all the benefits and flaws.
I use FreeBSD, I like it, but I also like to hack around in the Kernel for fun. I read somewhere that the Chinese military decided to use FreeBSD or one the BSD distros as the base for one of their development projects.
I'm not sure if that is true, but if it is, what does that say for national security and open source projects?
I'm pro open source, I like the benefits of using licenses like the BSD license and the MIT license. What do you guys think?
